SPARRING SKILLS & STRATEGIES
an Old School manual with the original "rescued" drawings
In most schools of karate, freestyle sparring is taught so that students are prepared to enter tournaments with the idea that non-contact tournament sparring is the safest way to simulate two opponents fighting each other. In reality, although sparring has something in common with fighting, no sparring (neither contact nor non-contact) can actually teach what is needed for self-protection in a C.A.D. (Combat Attack Deefnse) situation. At Hanshi Tony Annesi’s Bushido-ka,i non-contact sparring was taught so that the students develop skills and strategies that could be used in a C.A.D. situation. To that end, in the 1970s, Hanshi Annesi created a manual that illustrated examples of the sparring skills and strategies and challenged the reader with various suggestions in order to broaden his/her perspectives and vary his/her skills. In this volume, Hanshi Annesi has recreated his original manual complete with his original drawings rescued and refurbished, giving it that old-school flavor. This book also serves as an adjunct to Hanshi Annesi SUDDEN ATTACK DEFENSE,One-Step Sparring for Today’s World.
